Even 30 minutes of
secondhand smoke exposure
daily can cause heart damage similar to that
of a habitual smoker.
SECONDHAND SMOKE KILLS

People who are exposed to daily secondhand smoke have a 30% higher death and disease rate than that of non-smokers.

Secondhand smoke is the third leading cause of preventable death in this country, behind smoking and alcohol/drug abuse.

It is estimated that secondhand smoke causes 3,000 lung cancer deaths and more than 50,000 coronary heart disease deaths every year.

Secondhand smoke is also associated with sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and unhealthy (lower birth weight) infants. Smoking by mothers is linked to a higher risk of their babies developing asthma in childhood.

Babies and children raised in a household where there is smoking have more ear infections, colds, bronchitis, and other respiratory problems than children from non-smoking families

We have been meeting every other week since January, 2003 and have been very busy.....

1. We have researched every study on secondhand smoke

2. We have promoted the “Smokefree Homes campaign throughout the community, targeting physicians’ and dentists’ offices.

3. We have spoken on TV and radio and to community groups.

4. We have posted our message on billboards and in the newspaper.

5. We developed a tobacco curriculm which was distributed to all 5th grade teachers in Ohio County (public, private, and parochial) and provided materials for every fifth grader to participate in our poster contest with the theme, “Be Smart....Be smokefree”. Four winners were selected including one honorable mention, and they and their families and teachers were honored at an awards banquet, where they received very nice prizes donated by the community. These winning posters were then transferred to 8000 two-pocket folders and distributed to all Ohio County students.

6. We have promoted the YNOTQUITLINE which provides free patches and counseling to qualified smokers.

7. We surveyed over 900 Wheeling area Chamber of Commerce members and received post cards showing an overwhelming 85% in favor of a smokefree regulation.

8. We are available to assist businesses in establishing a smokefree workplace.

And, we have many projects planned in the future.
